Classroom and Laboratory Instruction

Overview:

Classroom instruction is the core component of the Killingly Agricultural Education Program.  We utilize a myriad of resources and facilities to bring the curriculum to life by using hands-on, real world situations.  Our facilities include: food science lab, production greenhouse, animal lab, aquaculture lab, and an ag mechanics workshop at Killingly High School.  We also are fortunate to have a 20 acre Agricultural Education Land Lab which includes farm and forest land adjacent to the Killingly Intermediate School in Dayville.  The Land Lab includes a barn and storage which houses our farm equipment.

Freshman Exploratory Curriculum:

The Freshman year is an exploratory year of instruction including a unit on the FFA (our student leadership organization).  The FFA Unit is followed by a rotation through subjects in production and companion animal science, plant science, environmental science, aquaculture, and agricultural mechanics. The freshmen course is weighted as a college prep level class, and is one credit.  At the end of the school year, freshmen are asked to choose 2 areas they would like to major in for the remainder of their high school career- Agricultural Mechanics, Environmental Science/Aquaculture, Plant Science, Production Animal Science, or Companion Animal Science.

Upperclassmen Curriculum:

During students sophomore year they will take a fall semester agricultural education course and a spring semester agricultural education course for a total of 2 credits for the school year.  Each Semester they will take a class in one of the 2 majors they chose at the end of their Freshman year. These classes lay the foundation for students to take classes their junior and senior year in their chosen major areas.  Junior and Senior years students will earn 1.5 credits each year via an agricultural education course in either of their two majors.
