The Town of Killingly is 50 square miles with 125 miles of paved roads and 17 miles of unpaved roads. This includes private roads. The Killingly Public Schools Transportation Department currently covers most of these roads four times a day during the regular school session. These roads are covered using 18 full size bus routes and three mini bus routes. Also special education transportation is provided using five mini buses and four mini vans. We provide transportation to schools in Wethersfield, Hartford, and Willimantic, CT. Also we provide transportation to Providence, Harmony and Warwick, RI and also to Watertown and Dudley, MA. The Before and After School Program (BASP) and also the after-school enrichment program uses four buses. In the summer, the department historically provides three buses for Special Education Summer Camp at Camp Quinebaug and also three buses for Summer Recreation at Owen Bell Park and to the Hygeia swim area. The state regulations and procedures for obtaining and maintaining properly licensed school bus drivers have become even more stringent. This has made recruiting prospective drivers more difficult. The mileage traveled this year was approximately 650,000 miles. | |
